Journey Dance Sample
I found this video of a "Journey Dance" class from Kripalu with teacher, Toni Bergins. I dare you to sit still when watching the video (you're gonna want to move) It is a good example of how some Dance/Movement therapy groups look when the therapist/teacher uses a structured improvisational approach. The way a group is structured depends on the group goals in dance therapy, and specifically addresses the mind/body connection.
This is not a therapy group but a "Journey Dance" class or workshop. There are all types of movement classes/experiences available today! Why not check out what's available in your area? Looks like fun, huh?
"Journey Dance" is trademarked and this class was facilitated at Kripalu. The video depicts a wonderful sense of nonjudgmental permission and support for members to express themselves at the level they feel comfortable. It also depicts the power of movement to elicit the mind/body connection as evidenced by some of the comments made from group participants!
Just as there as several different types of yoga classes, there are several types of mind/body movement classes available today as well. These differ from yoga therapy and/or dance therapy due to the specific therapeutic goals of the sessions specifically addressing certain mental health issues, and the education/certification of the particular therapist or dance teacher.
So...consider your specific desires and needs and the specific training/education of the teacher/therapist when checking out a mind/body approach toward health and wholeness. When you get that intuitive hit to take inspired action, then go for it, make an appointment or enroll in a class! Get moving today!
"Movement allows us to inhabit our bodies, to express the non-verbal feelings that are being held." -Debbie Ford (The 21 day consciousness cleanse)
